When applying for jobs, people should know what kinds of things employers are looking for.  That is, what exactly satisfies an employer, and what kinds of qualities do employers want in job seekers.  These qualities may usually depend on the kind of job and the field.  For example, computer science job employers may look for certain qualities in a job seeker and a police job employer may look for other qualities.  Some employers may look for common qualities like being a hard worker.   When applying for a job, the job seeker needs to make sure that he writes all the skills that he has.  The more skills that are written in the resume, the more likely the employer will be impressed.  If you lack certain skills and if you think those skills may be necessary in the future, then be prepared for it.  That is, try to have those skills before applying for jobs whether it's a soft skill or a technical skill.
The technical skills that are necessary for a job depend on the field of the job.  For example I'm a computer science student and some of my technical skills are computer languages like java, C, SQL, and Verilog.  These technical skills would be needed if you are going to pursue and career in computer science.  If it's a hardware job, the technical skills you will need to know is related to the computer hardware and internal pieces.  For a person who plans on doing movie filming, the technical skills may be how to use the movie filming video camera, how to do camera tricks, how to do audio tricks, etc.
Soft skills are non-technical skills which everyone should have.  Employers generally want job seekers who have  soft skills such as being a hard worker, highly motivated, able to work and communicate in a team efficiently, etc.  These are some of my soft skills.  Of course, employers will certainly want these skills from employees.  These are good examples of soft skills which all employers may want regardless of the job field.  Another example of a soft skill may be problem solving and thinking outside the box.  If any problem arises which is related to the job, are you able to solve it?  Are you able to think outside the box to find a solution to a problem?  These are all important skills which can be useful for any job especially if its an engineering or a doctor job.
